This detailed 3' wide sea turtle was inspired by an extraordinary experience I had with a Honu, or Green Sea Turtle, off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii. This juvenile Honu swam right up to me, and looked deep into my eyes. The creature seemed so gentle and curious, yet powerful and mysterious to me..
This hanging sculpture is created of needle felted wool around a lightweight core of upholstery foam. This piece commands attention where ever it hangs, bringing smiles and much wonder to all ages.
Honu is currently hanging above my work table in my Ashland Art Center studio for all visitors to enjoy, but I would love to see her hung in a museum, aquarium, or other public area.
Honu was featured in the Honolulu Museum of Art Schools' 'Nanogallery' in 2013, displayed at Zoonami- Art at Marks Garage in Honolulu, HI, and was for sale at the Maui Ocean Center gift shop until 2014. I'm proud to announce that she is now available, to be shipped directly to you from my studio in Ashland, Oregon!
About this piece:
Her shell has four hidden metal loops where durable clear filiment is attached, so this piece seamlessly floats at eye view. The core is lightweight, hand-carved upholstery foam, but the entire surface texture, colors, and detail are entirely felted wool. There are no seams as this piece was not stitched nor stuffed, but is a solid, one of a kind, fine art sculpture. All the details were added with dyed wool roving using a single barbed felting needle. Learn more > www.wooliza.com
