    Oil on stretched Canvas

    Original Work

This picture is based off of an onion I had left unused on my counter, and once it began to sprout oddly and whimsically from the top and I had to paint it. Near the time that I was painting this, I had seen 'Remains of a Meal' by Jill Hooper at my local art museum. Hooper describes still lifes as evidences of a human encounter, which I found interesting being that still lifes are void of any human image. I started to think of how my own painting was the opposite of Hooper's idea --rather than the remains of a meal, it was the result of human neglect. When I look at this painting I think of the beauty and resilience in living things when left to their own devices.
