This crudely made and painted mask,
missing its antlers, (notice the holes on the
sides), still evokes the face painting of
ancient ceremonies. Facial painting and
scarification once identified the priests and
other performers in the sacred rituals as
actors dwelling in that state where man and
god are one. The tire inner tube, used here to
fabricate the mask's ears, has been an
important material in mask making. The
introduction of the radial tire will have a
profound effect on the art.
