    The church fathers, unable to eradicate
    customs which they saw as inherently evil,
    affixed the horns of animals imported by the
    Spanish from Europe, to masks known to
    portray native gods. In so doing they created
    a new category, the Devil mask. It is a mask
    that has become very popular and takes
    many forms.

    Creyendo que eran de origen malvado, a
    los padres de la iglesia, incapaces de
    aniquilar las viejas costumbres, se les
    ocurrió la idea de ponerle cuernos de
    vacas, chivos y ovejas, animales todos
    importados de Europa por los Españoles,
    a las máscaras conocidas como retratos
    de dioses nativos. Al hacerlo crearon una
    nueva categoría, la máscara del Diablo.
    Es una máscara que se ha hecho muy
    popular y asume muchas formas.
